Microsoft Xbox 360

Personnal History

I got my first brand new console, the Xbox 360, at the age of roughly 16. It was a christmas present from my father and his girlfriend at the time. I always saw this gift as a “peace offering”, or a way to buy my cooperation. I was an angry teenager at that time, having a hard time at high school and being affected (already) by mental health issues such as depression. I was lucky enough to get the Falcon generatation, so the one that came with an HDMI port. This generation was known to be a little bit more reliable than the first version. A little bit more reliable, yes, but still prone to the infamous Red ring of Death, as I later learned when playing Fallout New Vegas. The console overheated during a bug, I restarted it and it was over. By chance, my roommate had made the move to the Xbox One and he gave me his old 360. One of the games that impressed me the most was probably Fallout 3. The scene when coming out of the atomic shelter and looking at the ‘colourful’ wasteland, this one made a lasting impression. The blue of the sky, the blinding color of the sand going for miles and miles. Not a lot of games manage to give me this kind of impression. One feature I really enjoyed was its compatibility with the Zune, I used that feature all the time. By plugging a Zune in the console, you could use it as a music source while gaming. I still have vivid memories of playing GTA with some MUCC music in the background.

Writing this, there’s a lot more memory coming up. I remember the launch day of the console and with so much frustration I watched videos online! I remember one precisly, with the song ‘The Fallen’ from Franz Ferdinand in the background, while one the first owners of the console, after making the lineup, destroys the console in front of everybody waiting in line. Everybody in shock (and with reason!), that this person could have waited hours waiting in line, just to destroy the console. For me, I couldn’t understand why someone would waste his money like this. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the video anymore. Another video that marked the young me, was the advertisment for the first Gears of War. The simple, slow and delicate song from Gary Jules ‘Mad World’ contrasting with the destruction and violence.

One of the next steps for this console, being modded with a Raspberry Pi microcontroller (the Raspberry Pi Pico)
